India Post GDS Eligibility and Selection Process: No Written Exam Explained
Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) is one of the highest-volume recruitment drives India Post runs, and it works differently from almost every other government exam on this list — there's no written test at all. Here's how eligibility and selection actually work.
Eligibility Criteria
Age limit: Candidates must be 18 to 40 years old, with age relaxation available for reserved categories as per government norms.
Educational qualification: You need to have passed Class 10 (Secondary School Examination) from a board recognised by the Central or a State Government, with passing marks in Mathematics and English. You also need to have studied the local language of the state/circle you're applying to up to Class 10.
Beyond the marksheet, candidates are expected to have basic computer knowledge, know how to cycle, and have an adequate means of livelihood — GDS is a part-time engagement, not a full-time salaried post in the traditional sense.
Selection Process — No Written Exam
This is the detail most first-time applicants miss: GDS selection involves no written examination or interview. Instead, it runs on a system-generated merit list built entirely from your Class 10 marks, converted to a percentage carried out to four decimal places to separate close scores.
The process has two practical stages:
- Shortlisting — candidates are ranked purely on 10th-standard marks, circle-wise and category-wise.
- Document Verification (DV) — shortlisted candidates must produce original documents matching what was declared in the application.
Because there's no exam to prepare for, the only lever that actually moves your chances is the Class 10 percentage you already have — there's nothing to study your way into after the fact.
Why This Changes How You Should Apply
Since selection is purely marks-and-merit, the highest-leverage decision isn't preparation — it's which circle and division you apply to. Cutoffs vary significantly by state and even by division within a state, so a percentage that misses the cutoff in one circle can clear it comfortably in another.
Vacancy counts, circle-wise cutoffs, and application windows are published fresh for each GDS cycle. Always verify current details against the official India Post GDS recruitment portal before applying.
