RRB Group D and NTPC Eligibility: Age Limit and Exam Pattern
Indian Railways recruits through two major RRB exam tracks — Group D and NTPC — and it's easy to mix up their eligibility rules since they target different qualification levels. Here's how each one actually breaks down.
RRB Group D
Age limit: Candidates must be between 18 and 33 years old.
Educational qualification: You need to have passed Class 10, or an ITI from an institution recognised by NCVT/SCVT, or hold a National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) awarded by NCVT. This is a level-1 (non-technical/semi-skilled) entry point, so the bar is deliberately lower than NTPC.
Exam pattern: CBT-1 consists of 100 MCQs, with negative marking of 1/3 mark for every wrong answer.
Selection process: Group D selection runs through three stages — the Computer-Based Test (CBT), a Physical Efficiency Test, and Document Verification. The physical test is a real filter here, not a formality, so physical fitness prep matters as much as the written exam.
RRB NTPC
NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Categories) covers office and ministerial roles and splits into two qualification tiers:
- Undergraduate-level posts: age limit 18–33 years
- Graduate-level posts: age limit 18–36 years
The wider band for graduate-level posts reflects the extra years typically spent completing a degree — if you're targeting NTPC, it's worth checking which specific posts in the notification fall under undergraduate vs. graduate level, since the age window changes accordingly.
Why the Distinction Matters
Because Group D and NTPC have different qualification floors and different age bands, candidates sometimes misjudge which track they're actually eligible for. Checking the specific post code and its qualification level in the notification — rather than assuming based on the exam name alone — avoids a wasted application.
Vacancy numbers, exact age cut-off dates, and post-wise qualification details are set fresh in each RRB notification. Always verify against the official RRB notification for the cycle you're applying to.
