SSC CGL Syllabus and Exam Pattern: Tier-I and Tier-II Explained
The Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level (SSC CGL) exam is conducted in stages, and understanding the exact structure of each stage is the first step to preparing for it properly. Here is what the official SSC notification lays out for Tier-I and Tier-II.
Tier-I: Computer-Based Objective Exam
Tier-I is a Computer-Based Test (CBT) made up entirely of objective, multiple-choice questions. It carries 100 questions for 200 marks and is split across four sections:
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | 25 | 50 |
| General Awareness | 25 | 50 |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 25 | 50 |
| English Comprehension | 25 | 50 |
Each section is allotted 15 minutes, and the overall exam duration is 60 minutes. There is a negative marking of 0.50 marks for every wrong answer, so guesswork on questions you're unsure about can cost you more than it gains.
Tier-II: Multiple Papers Depending on the Post
Tier-II is where the exam structure branches out. It consists of three papers:
- Paper-I is compulsory for every candidate, regardless of the post applied for.
- Paper-II is only for candidates applying to Statistics-related posts — specifically Junior Statistical Officer (JSO) and Statistical Investigator Grade-II.
Candidates who haven't applied for these specific posts do not need to sit for Paper-II, which keeps the Tier-II load focused on what's actually relevant to the post you're targeting.
Why This Matters for Preparation
Because Tier-I splits marks evenly across four very different subjects (reasoning, current affairs, math, and English), spreading preparation time evenly across all four — rather than over-investing in one — tends to produce a better overall score, especially given the negative marking penalty on Tier-I.
