SSC GD Constable Eligibility: Age Limit, Qualification, and Physical Standards
SSC GD Constable is the entry point into the Central Armed Police Forces (CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP, SSB, and others) plus the Assam Rifles and NIA/SSF, and unlike most SSC exams it adds a physical filter on top of the written test. Here's what actually determines eligibility.
Age Limit
The base age window is 18 to 23 years, calculated as on the cutoff date specified in the notification. Standard SSC age relaxations apply on top of this:
- OBC candidates: relaxation up to 26 years
- SC/ST candidates: relaxation up to 28 years
Educational Qualification
You need to have passed Class 10 (Matriculation) from a recognised board — that's the floor, and there's no upper qualification limit. Candidates who've gone on to complete Class 12, a diploma, or a degree remain fully eligible; higher education doesn't disqualify you from this post.
Physical Standards (PST)
The Physical Standard Test checks minimum height and chest measurements, and the required numbers differ by category and gender:
| Requirement | General/OBC/SC (Male) | General/OBC/SC (Female) |
|---|---|---|
| Height | 170 cm | 157 cm |
| Chest (unexpanded/expanded) | 80 cm / 85 cm | — |
Category-specific relaxations exist for ST and certain hill-area candidates — check the exact figures in the current notification for your category.
Physical Efficiency Test (PET)
Candidates who clear the Computer-Based Exam move on to PST and PET, both conducted in person at CAPF-selected locations. PET is a race against the clock (distance and time limits vary by category and gender per the notification) — it's a genuine pass/fail filter, not a formality.
The Weight Rule Has Changed
A notable update for recent cycles: candidates are no longer rejected during PST purely for being under or over a fixed weight. Weight is instead assessed at the Medical Examination stage using BMI (with an 18–25 BMI range as the reference), which gives naturally lean or heavier-framed candidates more room than a flat weight cutoff did.
Why the Physical Stage Trips People Up
Because SSC GD's written exam (General Intelligence, General Knowledge, Elementary Mathematics, English/Hindi) is genuinely one of the more approachable SSC papers, candidates who prepare hard for the CBT sometimes under-prepare for PST/PET — and lose the post at the physical stage instead. Treating height/chest eligibility and PET timing as a real prerequisite to check before applying, not after clearing the written exam, avoids that.
Height, chest, PET distance/time standards, and category relaxations are set fresh in each SSC GD notification. Always confirm current figures against the official SSC notification before applying.
